Swedish contractor NCC has been chosen to build a cultural district in the city of Örebro, designed by architect Gert Wingårdh.

The project, for property company Örebroporten Fastigheter, will be situated in the centre of the city, which is located about 150km west of Stockholm.

Jeanette Berggren, the chief executive of Örebroporten, commented: “The culture quarter will be a meeting place for everyone, and is a bold investment in Örebro’s future. It is incredibly important that the contractor has the right capabilities, and we found all this in NCC.”

Wingårdh, who is something of a TV celebrity in Sweden, said the quarter would be “right in the centre of the city, where people are moving. That were the culture should be”.

Work on planning the project has been under way since 2015. The main building will be a 14,000 sq m building divided into six storeys. It will include a public library, a lecture hall, and a cultural school with spaces for music and dance. The lobby will contain a large multiple stage, with a flexible stage and sliding seating for rehearsals, concerts and lectures.

Construction will start in the autumn of 2018, and the project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2021. The order will be registered in the NCC Building business area in in the third quarter of 2018. No project value has been disclosed.
